One-off 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Offered at RM’s SHIFT/MONTEREY

The 1971 Kirk F. White 365 GTB/4 Daytona Independent Competitzione Chassis No. 14065

Another legendary and brutally fast, front-engined Ferrari competition car headlining the auction is the 1971 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione. Likely to attract keen interest with Ferrari collectors and historic racing enthusiasts, this example, chassis 14065, competed in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1972 driven by David Hobbs and Skip Scott, and entered by noted American dealer and enthusiast, Kirk F. White. White enlisted the services of race car engineering firm Holman-Moody along with Traco to ensure the Daytona would gain the necessary upgrades to secure the win at the legendary endurance race. Unfortunately, sheered driveshaft bolts dashed aspirations of victory, despite the car leading the race by a comfortable margin and proving to be the fastest Daytona on track. Notably, there are only a total of six certified Daytona 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione examples, all equipped with 450 hp engines - the final five Series 3 factory race machines and this example, chassis 14065. The ex-Kirk White Competition Daytona comes complete with the Ferrari Classiche White Book “Attestato per Veicoli d’Interesse Storico” and has been meticulously maintained and cared for, always ready and race-prepared for modern competition.

Though this article is mainly intended as a critique of aesthetics, this competition Ferrari Daytona deserves to be in a museum based on its history alone. In general, race cars live difficult lives - many do not survive. If they manage not to crash, two possibilities emerge: Either they emerge intact at the end of a race because they cross the finish line unscathed, or in the second, more embarrassing outcome, they do not finish the race because of a mechanical failure. While the latter fate was to befall this 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona after setting a blistering pace during qualifying at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1972, it was not the end of its story. This Daytona’s “DNF” was due to its driveshaft bolts, which sheered clean off while it was in the lead, ending its aspirations of victory, but preserving its chances (and its Pininfarina coachwork) for future generations.
